Rehabilitation Treatments
You may receive rehabilitation treatment either as an inpatient or on an outpatient basis. Your care provider will discuss your personal care plan with you. It may include:
- Occupational therapy: OT is used to help you live and carry out daily life skills independently. It can also help improve your interactions with others. Treatment may include memory and movement exercises and practicing daily skills like doing household chores, getting dressed, prepping food, or using a walker.
- Physical therapy: PT helps with physical pain and movement issues that may affect your daily life. Treatment can include exercises, hot or cold therapy, electrical currents, or massage. You may also be given exercises to do at home.
- Pulmonary Rehabilitation: PR includes breathing techniques, diagnostic tests, therapeutic exercises and education on how to manage your lung condition. It also provides stress management techniques and can help improve quality of life.
- Speech therapy: ST helps you overcome speech difficulties and communicate better. Treatment can involve exercises to distinguish between or make certain syllables and sounds. It can also help you recall words or build vocabulary. It may include breathing, swallowing, and voice exercises as well.
Pediatric OT, PT, and ST treatments focus more on developmental milestones. They are generally play-based and age-appropriate to help make appointments fun for your child. They also involve you, the parent, in therapy to help you support your child at home.
Appointments are usually scheduled 2 to 3 times per week for 4 to 6 weeks. They are set at least 2 months out, so you or your child will go on the same days, at the same time each week.
Extended Care
Some people need treatment to last longer than others, based on their condition. Reeves Memorial offers a “swing bed” option for these patients.
Swing bed allows someone to stay in the same hospital room for an extended period of time until they fully recover. They will have an average of 2 to 3 hours of therapy per day.
Swing bed is covered by most insurance plans. Your provider will verify your eligibility.
